Kendall's 65 good for lead as 2nd round is suspended
Skip Kendall braved the elements Friday on his way to a 7-under 65 and in the process surged to the clubhouse lead at the Nationwide Tour's $750,000 Bank of America Open in Glenview.
On a day in which high wind tested everything not nailed down, Kendall somehow managed a bogey-free round -- moving to 11-under 133 and a 2-stroke cushion over Kris Blanks (70).
"Even if I were playing in calm conditions, I would take 65 around here in a minute," said Kendall, who hit 11 of 14 fairways and 15 of 18 greens in regulation. "It is a shock to me. I guess the ball didn't know it was windy out there."
Thunderstorms hovered over The Glen Club early in the day and forced a 90-minute delay to the beginning of play. Second-round action began at 8:30 a.m. local time, but only for 98 minutes before more inclement weather sent the players to shelter. When play began for the second time + wind gusts of up to 48 mph greeted the contestants.
"I didn't think we would go back out there," said Kendall, who ended his round well before darkness finally suspended play at 8:07 p.m. "It had to be blowing 50 miles per hour. Put it this way. I was hitting full 6-irons to the first flag on the driving range which is 90 yards away. I was hitting a flip lob-wedge there this morning."
Kendall's day got off to a bang when a holed-wedge shot from 94 yards led to an eagle on the par-5 first hole. It was a sign of things to come, as he added birdies on Nos. 5, 14 and 18 for a combined 5-under total on the par-5s.
First-round leader Kyle Reifers, who didn't begin his round until 7:10 p.m., stood at 9-under through four holes when play was finally called for the day. Matt Weibring (through 11 holes) is three shots back at 8-under.
