Car debate continues

Car debate continues:

Gurnee village board members will be receiving more information to help them decide whether certain employees should continue using publicly owned take-home vehicles. Gurnee trustees Monday night resumed discussion on whether the village should move away from the cars and toward providing department heads and other key employees with monthly automobile allowances. Village Administrator James Hayner was directed to get more information for the trustees, including how liability insurance would be handled for the workers who would get allowances and drive personal cars for job purposes. Officials were hoping a move to allowances could save money. It's not going to be a slam-dunk money-saver in the short term," Hayner said. Other Lake County towns, such as Lake Forest, have gone to auto allowances. If Gurnee goes that way, the police chief, public works director and village engineer likely would be the first to receive the monthly allowances.
