Cougars win at Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Starter Scott Deal pitched five shutout innings Sunday afternoon to set the tone for the Kane County Cougars, who knocked off the Cedar Rapids Kernels 4-3 in front of 2,160 at Veterans Memorial Stadium for their third straight win.

Deal, making his second start of the season after a relief role, gave up 4 hits, walked three and struck out four in his five-inning no-decision. Reliever Brent Lysander (1-1) ended up with the win after a 2-inning effort, as the Cougars broke through in the seventh against Eddie McKiernan (0-3). Michael Richard connected for a sacrifice fly, and Larry Cobb smashed a two-out opposite-field home run to make it 3-0. Then, Carlos Arrieche singled home Corey Brown in the eighth for a 4-0 lead.
