Changing your attitude can change your life
“… Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.”
–Romans 12:2 (NLT)
It’s that time of year again, when we are wondering if the groundhog will see his shadow and usher in an early spring.
Even though we enjoy the fun, by now most of us have figured out that it’s just a silly superstition.
Then there’s the crazy movie where Bill Murray experiences the same day over and over, and eventually makes some necessary changes to his life and the cycle ends.
As with our lives, when we remain self-focused and unwilling to examine our behavior, we get the same old thing day after day. But when we decide to get bold with God and make a change in our attitude, it opens up a new way of life. I’ve observed this happen in my own life and the lives of others.
One year a friend of mine shared with me how a guy they worked with was extremely unfriendly. This hurt my friend because they only tried to be nice.
A few years later, this unfriendly co-worker approached my friend and apologized. My friend was shocked at the major change this person had made. My friend went on to tell me how this person got married and started a family. Obviously, somewhere along the line they made an attitude change.
Then there was the story of an former co-worker of mine who called me out of the blue to thank me for mentioning something in a meeting that helped change her life. She told me I mentioned that I was turning the problem over to God. That statement made her look at how she was trying to control her own life instead of turning her problems over to God.
She blamed her husband for her infertility problem to the point of considering a divorce. When she decided to give the problem to God and be kind to her husband, she noticed how things were changing in her life. A new job opened up and, miraculously, after waiting for 10 years, she became pregnant.
Then there’s the time a friend shared with me how she decided to quit complaining about her job. She realized she needed her job and wanted to do her best to like it. After making this decision a few months later, she was offered a new position with a promotion.
It’s amazing how God can use a change in our attitude to pave the way to open up doors of opportunity to new and richer lives. Even the fulfillment of a dream can come true.
