Lake Zurich Dist. 95 may hike yearbook fee

Lake Zurich Unit District 95 may raise the price for student yearbooks, but is backing off an idea to boost a fee for transcripts high school seniors typically send when trying to get into college.

District 95 board members discussed the proposed price increases for the transcripts and yearbooks at a committee session Thursday evening.

But on Friday, the district's assistant superintendent for business and operations, Jeff King, said he expects the administration's request to increase the transcript fee will be withdrawn.

At the committee meeting, King said he isn't recommending any hikes in core registration fees for the 2011-12 academic year.

“I'm glad we're able to hold the fees,” board member Doug Goldberg said.

Lake Zurich High School's yearbooks are another matter. The price would go from $54 to $62.

King said the price boost is necessary because the district subsidized about $12,000 of the yearbook cost last year. Officials estimated yearbooks are purchased by 85 percent to 95 percent of Lake Zurich High School students.

Goldberg said it's reasonable for the district to break even on the yearbooks. Another board member, Tony Pietro, wondered if $62 would be too much to pay.

In comparison, Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire still is charging $42 for its yearbook, while Grayslake High School's north and central buildings charge $49.

District 95 board members are expected to vote on the yearbook price increase proposal at a Dec. 16 meeting.

As for the District 95 transcripts typically needed by Lake Zurich High School seniors applying to colleges, there had been an initial proposal for the fee to go from $3 to $10 to cover the time and expense to make copies.

Board member James Burke suggested at Thursday's meeting the district should look elsewhere for more money.
