The light of the Christmas season brings us joy

“The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.” John 1:9 (NIV)

Just a few short weeks ago, I looked out the window at the vast darkness that covered my neighborhood. It was only 4:30 p.m. and. already dark outside.

But tonight, as I look out my window, I see light the whole block is covered with row after row of colorful Christmas lights.

They are strewn across housetops and adorn evergreen trees. Many sit twinkling on garland as they light up porch banisters.

The light of the Christmas season is bringing joy to neighborhoods throughout our community. Some shine a brilliant white, while others give sparkles of color to all who pass by them. Men, women and children behold their beauty as they light their way unto familiar streets and highways. Enjoying the lights brings warmth and happiness to our weary souls.

I wonder if we enjoy the true light of the season as much?

Jesus was sent to the world to light up our hearts with joy and peace through a relationship with him. It makes our hearts lighter when we can turn to God and believe it was his son who brings forgiveness for our sins.

God forgives us just for the asking. We only need to believe Jesus paid the penalty for our sins. It helps us to have guilt-free living here on earth and the hope of an eternity in a beautiful place called heaven.

It brightens our spirits when we learn to ask God to forgive us, then turn the guilt we are carrying over to him and leave it there.

This season we should consider giving our burdens and grudges over to the only one who has the power to forgive. Then our hearts can light up with joy over the true beauty and grace of Christmas.
