Indiana police shoot man after bar fight

MARION, Ind. — Authorities in central Indiana say a man was wearing a bullet resistant vest when he pointed a rifle at police officers who then shot him multiple times in a weekend confrontation.

Marion officers chased an SUV leaving the scene of a bar fight when it crash. State police say 34-year-old Zar Dontay Dyson of Marion got out of the SUV and raised the rifle.

Police Sgt. Tony Slocum told the Chronicle-Tribune that three officers then shot Dyson, who did not fire any shots.

City Police Chief David Gilbert says Dyson was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital in serious condition after the shooting early Saturday.

State police are investigating the shooting, but Slocum and Gilbert say it appears they acted in self-defense.
