DNR studies pollution levels in Wisconsin River
MADISON, Wis. — The state Department of Natural Resources has launched a study to evaluate phosphorus levels in the Wisconsin River.
DNR officials say massive phosphorus-fed algae blooms are hampering river recreation and hurting waterfront businesses
The agency this summer passed rules calling for new limits on phosphorus in all state waters. The three-year Wisconsin River study will provide baseline data to develop limits for the river. The data also will help the DNR predict how the river might respond to other management plans, such as erosion controls.
DNR staffers are working with the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to collect water quality samples at 21 river and stream sites as well as 23 reservoir sites
