Rescue team searches Mundelein lake
A full water rescue was called to a Mundelein subdivision Monday afternoon after two kayaks were reported floating overturned in a lake, authorities said.
Responding rescue crews swept the lake on boats but concluded that the kayaks most likely drifted out onto the lake after being left unattended on the shore, said Countryside Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Ed Heinz.
A Countryside Lake security guard alerted authorities after a resident reported the two kayaks drifting on the lake, located just south of Route 60 off of Midlothian Road, about 4 p.m.
Responding emergency personel made the decision to call in a full water response after a neighbor mentioned seeing three people on the two kayaks about 3:30 p.m., Heinz said.
Boat crews from the Mundelein and Libertyville fire departments scanned the lake for about an hour before calling off the search, Heinz said.
Dive teams were not called in because no one was reported missing or seen in distress on the lake, Heinz said.
“It was most likely the people had paddled into shore and left the boats there unattended,” he said.
The Countryside Lake association is working to identify whom the boats belonged to, but police have impounded them for the time being.
