Libertyville firm among 3 area companies landing biotech grants

Libertyville-based Jina Pharmaceuticals, which is working on breast cancer prevention and treatment, is among three small biotech companies in Illinois getting more than $14 million in federal healthcare reform grants.

The money will fund 70 projects in Illinois to foster groundbreaking research into new medical treatments.

Government officials announced the grants Wednesday in Washington. Nearly 3,000 companies nationwide are receiving $1 billion.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius says the funds will allow companies to pursue research projects that might otherwise have been put on hold.

Illinois recipients in addition to Jina include Synergenz BioScience of Evanston and its lung cancer risk prediction test; and A.J. Medical Devices of Wilmette and its implanted cardiac arrest alarm.
