Delivery man charged with attacking FedEx driver at mall

A Lake Zurich delivery man faces a battery charge after police said he struck a FedEx driver in a fight at Gurnee Mills.

Michael Schacht, 58, was making a delivery to a Gurnee Mills store on Wednesday, Nov. 24 when he was blocked in by the FedEx driver, said Gurnee police Cmdr. Jay Patrick.

Schacht had stopped his box truck in a service area and went inside to make his delivery, Patrick said. When he returned, he was unable to leave the loading dock because a FedEx semitrailer had parked for its own delivery.

Schacht told police he waited 20 minutes for the FedEx driver to return to the truck, Patrick said.

"He said the longer he sat and waited, the angrier he got," Patrick said.

Schacht confronted the FedEx driver when he returned, put him in a headlock, and hit the man in the face, Patrick said.

The fracas was witnessed by mall security, which took Schacht into custody and held him until police arrived.

The FedEx driver told officers he thought he left enough room for the van to leave, Patrick said.

Schacht was charged with battery, a Class A misdemeanor, and posted $120 cash bond to go free pending resolution of his case.
