How to plan for disabled loved ones as they age

Theresa Varnet, an expert in future care planning for loved ones with disabilities, is conducting an educational seminar on Friday, Nov. 19 at FONA International Inc., 1900 Averill Road, Geneva, This seminar is essential for anyone with a disability, who has a family member touched with a disability, or works in the social service industry. The six-hour workshop, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will address the necessity of planning for the financial and legal future of those with disabilities. Topics include negotiating the Social Security maze, preserving eligibility for government benefits through estate planning, guardianship, attorney selection, and special needs trusts.

Bonnie McCrary of DayOneReliance, a co-host for the event, will be on hand to answer questions specifically about special needs trusts. Special-needs trusts help secure a future for a disabled person without jeopardizing their government benefits or entitlements through multiple trust options.

Attendees also will receive many useful handouts to guide families in their planning needs. Nursing home administrators, social workers, and QSP's are entitled to five CEUs. They will be required to sign in and out to receive their certificate. Those who need transportation are urged to contact their local Arc or Linda Bivian at (815) 464-1832.

To register for this seminar, call the Arc of Illinois at (815) 464-1832. Cost is $35 for family members and $55 for professionals. Registration also is available on-site at 8:30 a.m.
