Elgin's Vex Theatre puts a twist on holiday classic
Vex Theatre Company announces the opening of its new holiday show, “Twist-a-Carol” featuring the new one-act play “A Turn of the Scrooge.”
The show runs one weekend only, Dec. 3-5, at the Elgin Art Showcase, 164 Division St., eighth floor in Elgin. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10.
For ordering information, visit www.vextheatre.org. Note, this show is intended for teens and adults due to some mature themes and subject matter.
“Twist-a-Carol” consists of several quirky short plays about the holidays, plus singers performing holiday music. The centerpiece of this event is an original, one-act play by Vex Theatre Company called “A Turn of the Scrooge.”
This play, which features innovative physical theater pieces, is a reverse Christmas Carol, in which Scrooge starts happy and is visited by three new, modern holiday spirits.
In the end, will he learn that modern holidays can be a humbug?
The other short plays include “Marley's Ghost” by Don Nigro, and another original play debuting at this event: “A Christmas Classic” by Christopher Bibby of Hoffman Estates.
In “A Christmas Classic,” a traditional family learns to enjoy a very untraditional Christmas.
Holiday songs will be performed throughout the evening under the music direction of Peter Rasey of Chicago. There are performers in the show from throughout the suburbs, including Elgin, Palatine, Arlington Heights, Northbrook, Streamwood, Elk Grove Village, North Aurora, Elmhurst, and Chicago.
One dollar from every ticket sold will be donated to the Community Crisis Center, an Elgin-based charitable organization. Plus, the center will be operating the concessions table at this event, with all proceeds going to their programs. “We wanted to give something back to the community in this season of giving,” said Cathleen Ann, co-founder of Vex Theatre Company, “It will make a fun evening even more satisfying.”
Vex Theatre Company, based in Palatine, was founded in 2004 and is dedicated to bringing high quality, intimate theater to suburban stages.
