Seniors get a firsthand look at the justice system

More than 100 senior citizens had the opportunity to take an inside look at the workings of the justice system at the recent annual Senior Law Day.

Held at the Lake County sheriff's office, the seniors toured the jail and heard lectures on the role of judges and the legal implications of health care, living wills and probate matters.

State's attorney's office investigator Bill Biang gave a presentation on identity theft and con schemes aimed specifically at senior citizens.

Chief Circuit Judge Victoria Rossetti said she was pleased with the turnout for the event.

“They were an extremely interested and attentive audience and had a great many questions for our speakers, Rossetti said. “It was quite gratifying to see this group of people looking to become better informed citizens.

Fundraising success: The Gurnee-based Zacharias Sexual Abuse Center recently held its ninth annual casino night fundraiser.

Held at the Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park, the “Have a Heart/Restore a Heart event raised more than $100,000 to support the 27-year-old organization that supports survivors of sexual crimes.

The event also featured a presentation on the assistance provided by the center from a woman whose 18-year-old daughter was raped and stabbed on a hiking trail outside of Libertyville in 2005.

“Casino night is our chance to thank everyone for their support and raise vital funds, said the center's executive director, Torrie Flink. “Doing so helps ensure that our organization helps as many survivors as possible, while we also work to prevent rape and incest.

Red Ribbon Rally: The Circuit Court of Lake County, Regional Office of Education and College of Lake County will present the annual Red Ribbon Rally from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, at CLC in Grayslake.

The event, which is open to children throughout the county, promotes positive lifestyles and encourages children to avoid drugs, alcohol and smoking.
