Farmers donating part of harvest to Kane food banks
Farmers all across Kane County are running their combines day and night, busily harvesting their corn and soybeans, Illinois' two largest grain crops. As they work, many are also providing some much needed relief to area food pantries. More than 40 donors have raised over $13,000 in the Kane County Farm Bureau's "Harvest for ALL" campaign to help restock the shelves of local food pantries.
Now in its second year, "Harvest for ALL," allows producers to donate a portion of the proceeds from their harvest to a Kane County food pantry of their choice. Pledges and donations will benefit a dozen local food pantries and the Northern Illinois Food Bank.
Contributors to the 2010 campaign include farmers, agricultural businesses, Farm Bureau members and students from a local FFA Chapter. The value of all cash contributions and crop proceeds contributed or pledged thus far includes the proceeds from an estimated 1,800 bushels of corn and soybeans, thousands of fresh eggs, vanloads of fresh vegetables and $2,150 in cash.
