Des Plaines kitchen fire causes $100,000 in damages

A residential fire in Des Plaines Wednesday afternoon caused $100,000 in damages. fire officials said.

The Des Plaines Fire Department responded to the call from a homeowner of a duplex style home on the 1600 block of Stockton Street at around noon Wednesday who reported a kitchen fire, fire officials said.

Firefighters found heavy smoke and fire pouring out of the backside of the building when they arrived on the scene, officials said. The fire was extinguished after 15 or 20 minutes.

Smoke caused significant damages throughout the two story home that fire officials estimated at $100,000.

The homeowner ran to her neighbor's home to make the 911 call when the fire started, but she was not injured during the incident, officials said.

The home is not in a habitable condition and the resident will spend the next few nights in a hotel, officials said.
