Woman killed in Grayslake crash
A section of Route 83 in Grayslake was shut down Tuesday night after an Ingleside woman died when her vehicle crashed into an electrical pole near Winchester Road, police said.
Bonnie Rother, 68, was driving a 2008 Hyundai alone northbound on Route 83 near Winchester Road about 8:06 p.m. when her vehicle struck an electrical pole, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses told police the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it began to veer off the east side of the road. The woman then overcorrected and ended up striking the electrical pole on the west side of the road, snapping it in half, according to an initial police investigation.
Live wires from the crash fell onto the vehicle, forcing responding units to wait for ComEd workers to shut down power before they could reach the woman, police said.
Route 83 was closed between Winchester Road and Peterson Road until 10:35 p.m.
Lak County Coroner Richard Keller said the woman died from multiple blunt trauma, specifically to her chest and head.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is coninuing.
