Pop bottle bombs found in Carpentersville

Six relatively innocuous “MacGyver bombs were found on a Carpentersville street Monday morning.

They were found on Lexington Lane near Brighton Lane about 8:15 a.m.; four were in the roadway and two nearby.

The bombs were made by placing common, household items into plastic bottles for the chemical reaction.

Carpentersville police responded initially. When the Kane County bomb squad arrived at 11 a.m., one of the bottles already had exploded but the rest were detonated within 20 minutes with no injury or property damage.

“Where they were, they potentially would cause very little damage to no damage and unless you were standing over them; very little to no harm, Carpentersville Police Cmdr. Michael Kilbourne said. “That doesn't mean they're not dangerous and can't cause damage, but in this situation, where they were found, there wasn't much of a danger.

There have been no threats or complaints of similar bombs in the area before, Kilbourne said.

Carpentersville police have finished collecting the evidence and will process it to see if it will help them find the person responsible.

There are no leads and seemingly little motive for harm. “It really doesn't look like the intent there was to cause injury or damage, Kilbourne said.
