Aurora teen gets probation, jail for beating bartender
An Aurora man was sentenced to probation and jail Friday for beating up a bartender who wouldn't serve him because he was underage.
Aaron J. Carrola, 18, of the 0-99 block of Bluff Street, pleaded guilty in Kane County court to aggravated battery in exchange for 30 months of probation and 180 days in jail.
The attack happened Nov. 23, 2009, after Carrola accompanied his father to an Aurora tavern and ordered an alcoholic drink. Prosecutors said the bartender called police when Carrola was unable to provide ID, which led to a confrontation in which the bartender struck Carrola in the face with a “night stick.
Authorities said Carrola then chased the bartender into a parking lot and struck him several times on the head and body. According to prosecutors, the bartender also was stabbed leaving him with a facial scar and a lacerated liver but Carrola denied cutting the man or even carrying a knife.
As a result of the plea deal, an attempted murder charge was dismissed. Had Carrola been convicted of aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony, at trial, he could have been sentenced to up to five years in prison.
Carrola's jail sentence is considered already served because he has been held in the county lockup on $300,000 bail since Nov. 24, 2009, according to jail records.
