Lead check urged
In observance of National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, Oct. 24-30, the Lake County Health Department is reminding residents who live in homes built before 1978, to prevent lead poisoning by taking precautions around the house.
Parents are urged get their child a blood test that will show the presence of lead, which affects nervous systems in children and adults and can cause long-term damage, such as seizures and learning disabilities. Lead poisoning is the most common preventable childhood disease, according to the department, and younger children are most susceptible. Yet, because lead poisoning occurs without obvious warning signs, it often goes undetected in young children.
