Boston Blackie's to stay open in Deerfield

Boston Blackie's in Deerfield is one of only two of the franchise's restaurants that has remained open, officials from the restaurant group said.

The Deerfield location at 405 Lake-Cook Road joins another at Monroe and Canal as the only stores still operating, Manager Humberto Aguallo said. Restaurants in Arlington Heights, Glencoe, Naperville and Skokie were closed or changed names, along with two others in Chicago, he said.

The closings came on Sept 29, a year after the chain declared bankruptcy, and the owners, Nick Giannis, his son, Chris, and Andy Bakopoulos, all of Chicago, were charged with two counts of felony theft by the Cook County State's Attorney's Office for being part of a check writing scheme. Chris Giannis also was also charged with organizing a continuing financial crimes enterprise, a Class X felony.
