Possible break in shooting spree case

JOLIET — There could be a break in the investigation of apparently random shootings that terrorized residents along the Illinois-Indiana border two months ago.

The Will County Sheriff's office tells The Associated Press it'll have a major announcement Thursday afternoon about the attacks that left one dead and two injured.

The shooting drew national attention after the gunman asked one victim about honeybees before opening fire.

A law enforcement officer has confirmed a handgun used by 48-year-old Gary Amaya of Rankin as he tried to rob a suburban Chicago tanning salon Saturday matches the gun used in the spree. He was killed by a customer during the attempt.

To date, Will County authorities have said publicly only that Amaya was a potential suspect.
