‘No’ to Naperville term limits, districts,
Naperville voters on Nov. 2 get to decide whether they want to change the political landscape in the city. One ballot question asks if city council members and the mayor should be limited to three consecutive terms beginning with the April 2011 election. A second question asks if the city council should change from eight at-large districts to a mix of five districts and three at-large members. The district question has been debated in Naperville for at least two decades. If approved, the city would be split into five districts with about 30,000 people each. The mayor and the three at-large council members would be voted on by the entire city. The local chamber of commerce and the local League of Women Voters chapter both oppose districts and term limits. We agree. We see no issues with the way the council is set up today and we believe that voters already can limit terms by voting out people they feel are undeserving of re-election.
