Wheaton deserves credit for tax cut
The city government of Wheaton recently voted to decrease its property tax levy by more than $20,000. It is encouraging to see a city where revenues are ahead of expenditures, and where this can be accomplished even as taxes are being lowered.
Over the last few years, the city has continued to maintain positive account balances by finding the right mix of expenditures and tax revenue. Now, as the economy continues to rebound, the city is able to decrease property taxes while still keeping a positive balance in the budget. The city government deserves some recognition for the accomplishment.
Property taxes are clearly a vital source of income to the city, and for the city government to be able to reduce them sends a strong message to the community of fiscal responsibility. It is encouraging to see that the city officials view the tax dollars as a scarce resource and our anxious to return lower them when possible. The fiscal future of the city looks bright.
