Find appropriate site for N.Y. mosque
No one could possibly object to the right of religious freedom, guaranteed by our Constitution, which we have no desire to change. The objection is the New York mosque/community center close to ground zero in the shadow of the World Trade Center, where America experienced the worst attack in our history, totally unprovoked. I can still see people jumping out of the Twin Towers.
The New York governor has offered another and appropriate site for the mosque. It is interesting to me that a religious man such as Imam Rauf could be so lacking in recognizing our grief and remembrance of Sept. 11 and our desire for the planned memorial to the 3,000 Americans killed as well as the wishes of the families of victims.
He has become so militant about this location, daring us to "be intolerant."
Our Constitution does allow us to prevail. We are a free people and we have the right to assemble decently in opposition and picket the site. No American can be forced to dig a foundation, lay brick or anything else. This would include police, firefighters and medics who lost so many of their own, knowing they were going into these buildings, never to come out.
Any American who wishes to honor the families of Sept. 11 can certainly congregate and picket for this objection. Let it happen!
