More to see at Russell Military Museum
An F-15 fighter jet from the U.S. Air Force is among the recent additions that visitors can view at Russell Military Museum in far northern Lake County.
More than 100 military machines spanning from World War I to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are on display at the museum at 43363 Old Route 41, just west of I-94 in an unincorporated area near the Wisconsin border.
All military branches are represented at the museum.
Founder and owner Mark Sonday said the F-15 and two T-38 fighter jets were purchased at an Air Force base in Texas for the museum a couple of months ago. He said the jets were mostly taken apart, hauled to the museum and reassembled.
Sonday said he spent about $10,000 for the three fighter jets that'll be permanently on display. He said he tried to keep the exhibits fresh by adding new equipment.
"Everybody likes airplanes," Sonday said. "It's a nice addition."
All children dressed in camouflage gear will receive a $1 discounted admission during the final weekend from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, and Sunday, Oct. 17.
Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children, with hours running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Tank rides are $15.
Sonday launched what originally was Kenosha Military Museum in Wisconsin more than 20 years ago. The museum moved to Russell and opened in 2008.
