Batavia United Way helps record number of families

A record number of families received a helping hand this holiday season through the efforts of the Batavia United Way.

The not-for-profit organization raised $1,260 in a series of efforts, not including gifts purchased for families in need by local businesses and individuals. The money eventually helped 20 families. That is five more than last year, requiring a larger number of people and organizations to assist with donations and shopping. The families in need received bags of toys, clothes and holiday meals.

Batavia United Way coordinated a partnership with Rotolo Middle School's guidance department for the sixth straight year and added help from the Batavia High School Dance Team for the purchasing of gifts and food. Heritage Woods of Batavia held a fundraiser at its Christmas tree lighting ceremony. A donation from its corporate owner, BMA Management, helped push the total raised at that individual event to $720. Old Second National Bank had a giving tree in all Batavia locations, raising another $240 to the effort.

Batavia United Way's Jody Haltenhof said she was happy to see the program expand and help more families than ever.

“Every year the number of families assisted grows,” Haltenhof said in a written statement. “Thankfully, the community generously responds to cover the need. We saw more and different businesses, as well as individual families step in to help this year.”
