Need for slots at track should be obvious

On Wednesday's front page was yet another depressing article concerning the fate of Arlington Heights residents higher taxes, staff reductions, pay freezes, less services more budget deficits. I'd like to ask our mayor and our board one question: Why is it not sinking in that you are sitting on a gold mine?

I believe we are one of only six communities in the entire state that has a horse racing track in our backyard, and it happens to be one of the classiest tracks in the country. How many times does the track have to announce that they, and the entire industry in Illinois are in trouble?

You recently lost the Sheraton, and I believe you are probably only one more racing season away from having Euclid becoming the largest stretch of vacant buildings anywhere.

Please visit prariemeadows.com then go to the “Community Development” heading and try looking at the overwhelming benefits of their business. Mr. D has said, that if slots are allowed, purses will increase which will bring in better horses, trainers, etc. He may also build an entertainment center down the road.

What follows is increased tourism, and then the Sheraton becomes prime property again. With easy access from 53, the rail system, airport close, Euclid Ave. could become a cash cow for Arlington Heights do you want Des Plaines and Rosemont to have all the revenues?

Why is the board continuing to view our village in a Mayberry mentality, and turning its back on the largest employer here don't they bail you out every year by providing a classy fireworks show out of their pocket, sparing you the $15-30K expenses every year, that all the surrounding towns come up with?

Instead of dwelling on the negatives, you should be in Springfield openly lobbying for commercial advancement.
