Kids & Kritters a win-win for area children, animals
Anderson Animal Shelter, 1000 S. LaFox St. (Route 31) in South Elgin, offers Kids & Kritters.
The sessions are two-hour interactive animal encounters where participants, age 9 to 12, will learn about animals, engage in hands-on activities with shelter residents, and have fun. Each month a new topic will be explored. Sessions are held from 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays and 4 to 6 p.m. Thursdays.
The cost is $5 per session so plan to join them every month.
Registration is limited and taken on a first-come, first-served basis one month prior.
Upcoming topics include:
• In September, "Fun For Fluffy & Fido!," pet enrichment and nutrition. Pets like to have activities, exercise, and challenges. Life is more fun when there's plenty to do. Learn what you can do to enrich your pet's life and keep the fun in their days. Plus, put on your chef hat and make dog treats to keep the shelter's canine residents happy.
• In October, "Scary Animal Myths" will focus on various animal myths, their origins, and truths. For example, is it fact or fiction that the common wood frog can literally freeze when the temperature drops and thaw when it gets warmer? Are black cats really bad luck? Is there a type of dog that can track a scent for 100 miles? Learn all this and more at our spooky session.
• In November, "Shop 'Till You Drop (For Your Pets!)" learn about some items no dog should be without and why. There are at least 10 essential items you and your dog need to live together comfortably. Attendees will be brainstorming and writing down these items as well as discussing how to be a responsible pet parent.
• In December, the "Holiday Toy Workshop" will put your creative talents to work being elves for the furry friends in the shelter. Pets enjoy toys just like you do. Toys help them unleash energy and relieve boredom. In the workshop, participants will make toys for canine and feline friends.
