It's the issues not the party
I find myself identifying more and more with the issues a politician is promoting and less with whether he is a Republican or Democrat. I realize that I can find it difficult to decide who I am going to support or vote for in an upcoming election, yet this is why people vote a split ballot.
Rather than seeming to be a poor decision maker, the person can better decide he is a more thoughtful voter. You can only vote for one person for office, so you need to use as many determinations as possible.
Being Republican or Democrat can be pushed down the list of factors.
