Arlington Legion to host fundraiser for disabled Marine
Arlington Heights American Legion Post 208 announces its presentation of “A Christmas Carol for the Troops” at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10; Saturday, Dec. 11; and Sunday, Dec. 12.
This unique adaptation of the Dickens' classic takes attendees back in time to a dramatic radio broadcast for the troops on Christmas Eve 1944. Proceeds from the three performances will help meet the needs of disabled Marine Cpl. Yuriy Zmysly and his wife, who live in Oak Lawn.
The audience at the Legion's hall, 121 N. Douglas Ave. in Arlington Heights, will witness actors re-enacting an entire “live” production, complete with emcee, singers and sound-effects artists. The performance, in cooperation with Dan Tomko, brings to life the wonder of a radio play through the familiar story of Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation from humbug to holiday believer. Listeners will also be treated to holiday songs and news from the early 1940s.
“A Christmas Carol” is, of course, a holiday tradition. But in this time when our nation is still engaged in wars on many fronts, the Legion wanted to use that tradition to increase awareness for how our troops and families are affected,” says Ellen Janda, post commander. “We are teaming with Salute, Inc., so that proceeds from this special event can assist this young Marine and his family, whose lives were forever changed by today's war in Iraq.”
It was shortly after Zmysly returned from two tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan to active duty in the U.S. that he suffered a ruptured appendix and incurred a devastating brain injury during surgery. Today, he is unable to speak and has limited movement. His wife, Aimee, is his full-time caregiver and they are currently struggling to make their home fit for his wheelchair and ongoing medical needs. Through the help of Salute, Inc., an organization helping to meet the financial, physical and emotional needs of military service members, veterans and their families, all proceeds from the three performances will be donated to the family for home renovations.
Tickets for any of the three performances are $15 each. Doors open for cocktails at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be available during intermission.
The American Legion is also selling $1 “war bonds” for Zmysly at the Legion Hall and purchasers can write their names on the bonds which will then be displayed throughout the holidays.
