Miami court re-enacting Al Capone perjury trial

MIAMI -- Notorious Chicago gangster Al "Scarface" Capone is going on trial again in Miami for perjury. Figuratively speaking, that is.

Actors portraying Capone and others in the 1930 trial staged a re-enactment Tuesday in Miami's downtown courthouse.

It's one event marking the 100th anniversary of Miami's 11th Judicial Circuit.

In the real trial, Capone was acquitted of perjury. The charges came after Capone claimed he was denied basic rights after an arrest. Police had decided to arrest Capone on sight in a campaign to drive him out of Miami.

The re-enactment is using transcripts from the actual trial.

Capone eventually went to prison for tax evasion. He was released in 1939 and died at his Palm Island mansion in 1947.
