Cops: Antioch residents held captive at knifepoint

A knife-wielding intruder broke into an Antioch-area home early Wednesday, keeping residents captive for three hours before stealing their car and leaving, police said.

The three victims were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville and treated for minor injuries, Lake County sheriff's police said.

"The family was very shaken up by the ordeal," Sgt. Christopher Thompson said. "It was a startling and extremely scary event for them."

The incident began about 5:30 a.m. in a house on the 41600 block of North Pederson Drive. One of the residents, a 63-year-old man, walked into the kitchen and found the intruder there with a serrated kitchen knife, police said.

The intruder appeared to be in his late teens, police said. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with black checks, dark cargo pants and black sneakers. He also may have had a blue scarf over his face, police said.

The intruder kept the man and two other residents - a 49-year-old woman and a 14-year-old girl - in the home for three hours while he searched the residence, police said. He stole several undisclosed items and then drove away in the family's 2008 silver Nissan Altima.

The car has an Illinois license plate reading A329079, police said.

Authorities are investigating whether the case is connected to any recent home invasions in the area, Thompson said. Last week, two intruders bound a Lake Villa resident and burglarized his home before stealing a car.

"We are their police, and we intend on bringing this person to justice," Thompson said.
