Blaze damages home near Long Grove fire station

Long Grove firefighters didn't have to go far to extinguish a fire inside a single-story ranch home at 160 Old McHenry Road early Tuesday morning.

A resident of the home walked across the street to the Long Grove Fire Protection District station to report the fire at 12:29 a.m., according to Chief Robert Turpel.

The “aggressive interior fire” was confined to a bedroom and extinguished within five minutes, Turpel said. A total of seven suburban fire departments responded to the scene.

The cause of fire was accidental, due to the use of smoking materials, Turpel said.

All five residents inside the residence escaped without injury. Three decided to return to the home, and two others went to stay with friends, Turpel said.

Fire, smoke and water caused an estimated $50,000 in damages, officials said.
