Elgin fire chief to bid farewell, again
It's déjà vu all over again for John Henrici at the Elgin Fire Department.
Henrici announced Wednesday he is re-retiring as the city's fire chief on Nov. 28.
He first retired from the department in 2003 after 17 years as chief, but was called back to serve as interim chief in 2007 after then-Chief Mike Falese took another job. A search committee eventually removed the interim label from his title.
"I've enjoyed working with all of the professionals at the Elgin Fire Department," Henrici, 72, said in a prepared statement. "I am leaving the department at a time when things are running smoothly, labor and management relationships are good, and the department is moving forward."
Richard Dunne, an Elgin City Council member and fire department lieutenant, noted that Henrici has 50 years of fire service and took over when the department was in turmoil.
Dunne, a firefighter for nearly 23 years, said Henrici helped modernize the department's record system and put replacement of vehicles on a rotating schedule. Dunne also credited Henrici for his "calming demeanor" and ability to see the big picture.
"He brought the experience of 'been there, done that' to a lot of issues at the department. He was able to put that all into perspective," Dunne said. "He did take care of his guys. That's the important thing."
City Manager Sean Stegall has said Henrici's departure is an opportunity to assess the needs of the fire department while a new chief is sought.
"Jack has been a great asset to the community and the organization," Stegall said. "He will be greatly missed."
The fire department employs more than 130 firefighters and emergency medical services personnel.
