Hurricane Earl prompts postponement of White Sox game

With Hurricane Earl in the area, the White Sox' game against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Friday night was postponed hours before the scheduled first pitch.

The White Sox and Red Sox are going to play a split doubleheader Saturday, with John Danks opposing Clay Buchholz at 12:05 p.m. and Gavin Floyd starting against John Lackey at 6:05 p.m.

As expected, left-handed relief pitcher Matt Thornton (elbow inflammation) was activated off the disabled list Friday. Thornton is 3-4 with 5 saves and a 2.66 ERA. He also leads American League relievers in strikeouts per nine innings (12.17).

• Brent Morel had his contract purchased from Class AAA Charlotte. The third baseman started the season at AA Birmingham and batted a combined .322 with 37 doubles, 10 home runs and 64 RBI in 130 games.
