Gorzelanny's hand fractured, to miss next start
Left-handed pitcher Tom Gorzelanny suffered a "small, incomplete fracture" under the pinkie of his pitching hand, the Cubs said Thursday.
Gorzelanny was hit by a line drive off the bat of Pittsburgh's Jose Tabata during the third inning of Wednesday's game. He left the game without facing another batter.
The Cubs termed the injury "stable" and said Gorzelanny would miss his next scheduled start more so because of swelling in his left palm. Once the swelling subsides, the Cubs will have a better idea of when Gorzelanny can pitch again.
X-rays Wednesday revealed no displaced fracture, but the Cubs sent Gorzelanny for a CT scan Thursday, and that procedure revealed the small fracture.
It's possible Gorzelanny's turn in the rotation, which comes around on Tuesday, could be taken by right-hander Carlos Silva, who pitched for Class A Peoria Wednesday at Kane County in a rehab start. Silva is coming back from a procedure to correct a rapid heartbeat.
At Kane County, Silva worked 4 2/3 innings, giving up 6 hits and 5 runs. He threw 78 pitches, 52 for strikes.
