Sox open 2011 season in Cleveland, to face Nats for first time
CHICAGO - The Chicago White Sox have announced their tentative 2011 regular-season schedule, with the season-opening series at Progressive Field in Cleveland from Friday, April 1-Sunday, April 3, as the club opens the season on the road for just the second time in the last seven seasons (also at Cleveland in 2008).
Following two games at Kansas City on April 5-6, the White Sox celebrate Opening Day at U.S. Cellular Field on Thursday, April 7 vs. Tampa Bay. After four games with the Rays (April 7-10), the Sox continue a season-opening, 10-game homestand with three games each vs. Oakland (April 11-13) and the Los Angeles Angels (April 15-17).
The White Sox and the Chicago Cubs continue their interleague rivalry for the 15th straight season, with the Sox hosting the Cubs from June 20-22. The rematch will take place at Wrigley Field from July 1-3. The White Sox lead the all-time regular season series vs. the Cubs, 41-37, after winning four of six games in 2010.
The White Sox start interleague play at home when they face the Los Angeles Dodgers from May 20-22. The White Sox visit the Arizona Diamondbacks (June 17-19) and the Colorado Rockies (June 28-30). In addition to the Dodgers and the Cubs, the Sox host the Washington Nationals for the first time in franchise history on June 24-26.
The White Sox play the New York Yankees eight times in 2011, with a pair of four-game series (April 25-28 at Yankee Stadium and August 1-4 at U.S. Cellular Field). The Sox face the Boston Red Sox six times, including a three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field (July 29-31). The White Sox conclude the 2011 season with a six-game homestand against Kansas City (September 23-25) and Toronto (September 26-28).
The longest homestand of 2011 is 10 games, which occurs three times during the season (April 7-17, June 3-12 and July 25-August 4). The longest trip is 11 games, taking place from April 18-28.
The White Sox will open the season on a Friday, the first time they haven't played the season opener on a Monday since 2006 (Sunday night). Major League Baseball adopted the recommendation of The Commissioner's Special Committee for On-Field Matters to begin the regular season earlier and mid-week to avoid playing World Series games in November.
The 2011 schedule is tentative and subject to change. Game times and a complete broadcast schedule will be released at a later date.
