Scouting Aurora CC at Wheaton Academy
Aurora Central Catholic (2-1, 1-0) at Wheaton Academy (3-0, 1-0)
Game time: 7 p.m. today, West Chicago High School.
Last year: Did not play.
Last week: Aurora Central 12, Chicago Christian 0; Wheaton Academy 55, Guerin 14.
Outlook: An ACC win here would mark the Chargers' first three-game victory streak since 1997, their last playoff season. To do so, ACC must continue controlling the ball and clock on the ground, and pressure the quarterback. Wheaton Academy's Tommy Decker throws tight spirals sideline to sideline to a slew of receivers. Last week he threw touchdown passes to Tyler Bosse, James Johnson and Luke Thorson, who also scored on an interception return. Decker (62-of-101 passing, 714 yards, 7 touchdowns, 4 interceptions) will also target Sam Cote, who had a 100-yard receiving day against Chicago Christian, and particularly on the swing pass to Kai Libby, who last week ran for 182 yards with a 73-yard touchdown. Limiting yards after catch is essential for ACC. Chargers coach Brian Casey sends cornerback Pat Sweet to blanket the 6-foot-5 Thorson; last week Sweet held Chicago Christian's 6-4 Mike Kamp to 2 receptions and broke up 3 other passes while junior linebacker Nick Holzer made 14 tackles with 2 sacks, 3 tackles for loss, and recovered a fumble. Both these teams will blitz a lot, and Casey hopes the offensive line can pick them up and provide running lanes for Zach Tobin, Kyle Clechenko and Marcus Jefferson, who ran for a 35-yard touchdown against Chicago Christian. Averaging 4.6 yards on first down helped thrust the Chargers into a game with conference ramifications - which hasn't happened much here lately. "For these kids, at 2-1, it's the biggest game they've played so far, and they have a great opportunity in front of them," Casey said.
Next week: Montini (1-2) at Aurora Central, Sept. 24; St. Francis (2-1) at Wheaton Academy, Sept. 24.
