Des Plaines man dies two years after bar fight

A Des Plaines man who was injured in a Chicago bar fight two years ago died earlier this week from his injuries, officials said.

Jason Stangeland, 30, of Des Plaines was pronounced dead about 5 a.m. Monday at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Des Plaines police said Stangeland was injured in the fight in early February of 2008 at a Chicago nightclub.

A Tuesday autopsy indicated that Stangeland died of paraplegia, a blood clot in his lungs and other injuries from the 2008 assault, according to the medical examiner's office.

The death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner. The case is now being handled by the Chicago Police Department.

No suspects have been arrested since the fight, a Chicago Police spokesman said, and no one witnessed the fight.

He added the incident is under investigation and police are still waiting for the medical examiner's report.
