EIU says economy leads to drop in enrollment

CHARLESTON -- Enrollment has dropped 2.8 percent this fall at Eastern Illinois University.

University officials on Wednesday said the recession is responsible for the drop from 11,966 students a year ago to 11,630 this fall.

Officials told the Mattoon Journal-Gazette that enrollment of juniors, seniors and transfer students is higher this fall than last.

Eastern officials also say they suspect many students who might otherwise be at four-year schools now are instead enrolled at cheaper community colleges and could still wind up at universities.
