W. Illinois coach settles discrimination case

MACOMB -- Former Western Illinois University head football coach Don Patterson was found to be the victim of discrimination and has resolved a lawsuit filed against the school.

A statement released by the university last September announced Patterson was resigning because his battle with tonsillar cancer and subsequent treatments had taken a toll. It has since been revealed the statement was fabricated.

According to Patterson, doctors had given him a clean bill of health days before the issuance of the statement.

Patterson on Monday didn't reveal details of the agreement with the university. In a statement, university attorney Heidi Benson said the issue was "resolved to the satisfaction of both parties."

Diagnosed with cancer in 2008, Patterson says he's had no recurrence of cancer in nearly two years. He added he hopes to coach college football again.
