Man found shot to death in townhouse in Gilberts
A man was found shot dead in a townhouse in Gilberts Wednesday morning and Gilberts police say they are questioning a "person of interest."
Gilberts Police Chief Steven Williams said the shooting, which occurred in the 300 block of Evergreen Circle in the Timber Trails subdivision, was still being considered only a "death investigation."
William said police received an emergency call at 8:30 a.m. for shots fired at that address. A man who was a resident of the home made the call, Williams said.
"We responded and found the decedent in the bedroom on the floor. There was another individual there who we are talking to at the moment," he said Wednesday evening. "No charges have been filed yet. We have a person of interest who we're talking to."
As police removed evidence Wednesday afternoon, neighbors gathered behind yellow police tape wondering if the shooting was random and if they were in danger.
Williams said it was not a random home invasion or breaking and entering. "We are absolutely convinced that is a household matter," he added.
Williams said police are still trying to identify the man; an autopsy is expected this week. Williams did not know how many times the man was shot.
"We're still in the process of looking for cooperative dialogue. We are working to determine what happened," Williams said.
Neighbor Maribel Gavina said the man who died is probably 60 or 65 years old and began staying at the townhouse during the winter. He owned a white minivan, she said, which police towed away.
Gavina said she never talked to the man and only saw him outside occasionally smoking cigarettes.
Gilberts police are working with the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force on the investigation.
