Gilberts police rule out suicide in case of body found in townhouse

Gilberts police are continuing their investigation into the death of a man found fatally shot in a townhouse Wednesday morning, but authorities have ruled out suicide, police Chief Steve Williams said.

Police still are questioning a "person of interest" in the case, and no charges had been filed as of this afternoon, Williams said.

"He's talking to us. That's a good thing," he said. "We're reviewing all of the circumstances and trying to make sure round pegs fit in round holes and trying to verify everything."

Police, working with the Kane County State's Attorney's office, are investigating the shooting which occurred in the 300 block of Evergreen Circle in the Timber Trails subdivision. The case still is considered merely a "death investigation," Williams said.

Police received an emergency call at 8:30 a.m. about shots fired at that address. A man who was a resident of the home made the call, Williams said.

Police are still trying to identify the shooting victim, who was 60 or 61 years old, and notify his relatives.

"We think we know who he is. We have not been able to locate next of kin," Williams said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

Neighbor Maribel Gavina has said an older man, probably 60 to 65 years old, began staying at the home earlier this year, probably about February or March. The man also owned a white minivan, which police towed away Wednesday.

Gavina said she never talked to the man and only saw him outside occasionally smoking cigarettes.
