Motorcyclists' charity ride Sunday

With balmy weather forecast for Sunday, organizers of the A.B.A.T.E. Toy and Food Run expect a big crowd to show up in Batavia.

Especially compared to last year, when unseasonable cold kept riders away, said Judy Kaenel, events coordinator for the group organizing the event.

Motorcycle riders will take to the streets to support charities during the 24th annual ride organized by the DuKane Chapter of A.B.A.T.E., A Brotherhood Aimed Toward Education, a motorcyclist rights' advocacy group.

Cyclists pay $10 to enter the ride, which begins and ends at the Overseas Post 1197, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 645 S. River St. (Route 25).

Lineup begins at 9 a.m., the run starts at 9:30.

Riders are asked to bring nonperishable food and unwrapped toys to be donated to local charities.

In years past, 500 to 2,000 people have shown up, Kaenel said.

Donations from the 2006 ride filled two 45-foot trailers.

Thirteen social service agencies from Kane and DuPage counties have signed up to accept the items, Kaenel said. Past recipients have included Lazarus House shelter in St. Charles and the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

Vendors will be at the VFW selling leather items, clothes, jewelry, patches, cigars, crystal headbands and more, and the VFW will sell food.

Shortly after 3 p.m. the motorcyclists will parade on Wilson Street through downtown Batavia, honoring political candidates who support A.B.A.T.E.'s positions. There will also be a tribute to veterans and active military personnel.

A.B.A.T.E. will also collect donations of money for Camp Quality USA, which provides summer camp experiences for children with cancer.
