Your news: The art of found poetry
The Northwest Cultural Council announces a Second Saturday Poetry Workshop to be held from 9 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Sept. 11, led by Jo Stewart. Saturday's topic will be The Art of Found Poetry.
Poets have used a variety of poetic forms throughout the ages. The focus will be on a form known as "found poetry," and a discussion of the various sources of "found poetry." In addition to challenging a poet this form can be a source of fun as well. If there is time after critiquing all the poems you bring to class, there will be an in-session writing exercise in "found poetry."
Jo Stewart retired several years ago as regional director for the Chicago Department on Aging. She's facilitated over 20 memoir writing workshops in the last eight years. Stewart started her professional career as a reporter for the Southtown Economist but poetry has always been her first love. Her poetry has been published by Modern Bride Magazine, the Blue Collar Review, various academic magazines and The Journal a publication of the Northwestern University Life Long Learning program and one for which she has served as associate editor for three years. Her academic career and education spanned 22 years, eight children and four institutions.
Participants are encouraged to bring 12 copies of their own work to share with the group. Workshops take place at the Palatine Public Library, 700 N. North Court, Palatine, the second Saturday of each month. All poets and writers are invited to attend the workshop. The cost is $15. Please R.S.V.P. by phone or e-mail.
