Pension reform referendum:The Lindenhurst village board voted Monday in favor of an advisory referendum that will ask citizens whether they want the General Assembly and governor to reform police and firefighter pensions. The question will appear on the Nov. 2 ballot. Lindenhurst board members said the pension system is a significant part of the state budget crisis. Voters in Barrington and Lake Forest voted in favor of a similar referendum in February.Campfire offers families an evening outdoors: Enjoy an evening with family and friends around the campfire from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, Aug. 13, at the Greenbelt Forest Preserve in North Chicago. Jim DeNomie, a Bad River Chippewa, will explain their culture and history and tell stories about the importance of caring for nature as part of the free Family Campfires series held this summer and fall by the Lake County Forest Preserve District. Participants should meet at Shelter D and bring a blanket or lawn chairs. Light refreshments will be served. Subsequent dates are Sept. 24, Oct. 8 and Nov. 12. All campfires are 7 to 9 p.m. at Greenbelt, on the west side of Green Bay Road, south of Route 120. Call (847) 968-3337 or visit LCFPD.org.Pawgust Fest: The Labrador Education And Rescue Network will host its sixth annual Pawgust Fest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at 25775 St. Mary's Road in Libertyville. Activities including swimming, lure coursing and dog games. Demonstrations include agility, flyball, search and rescue plus hunt and retrieve. Dog merchandise, grooming services, pet photography, microchipping, dog communicator plus food and drink for two- and four-legged animals available.
