Fair presents Tri-Cities groups to area volunteers

Since 2002, Fox Valley residents have donated countless hours to area agencies and nonprofit groups who count on the annual Fox Valley Volunteer Fair to attract helpers. This year's event is planned for Saturday, Sept. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave.

The Batavia Chamber of Commerce is hosting the September event, which is a departure from previous years, according to Patti Lackman, member of Batavia Chamber of Commerce and the League of Women Voters. The fair was originally created by the League of Women Voters of Batavia as a call to action from the League of Women Voters of the United States; in response to the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Since that time the group, under the guidance of Barbara King, has promoted community volunteerism and involvement by hosting the fair. Because the Batavia group recently merged with Geneva and St. Charles chapters, the Volunteer Fair's status was in jeopardy. Batavia Chamber of Commerce stepped in to take over.

"We sincerely thank Barbara King and the League for this great service," says Roger Breisch, executive director of Batavia Chamber of Commerce. "We are pleased to ensure that this important community activity continues."

Area nonprofit groups and agencies that depend on volunteer support are encouraged to contact the chamber to apply for a booth. More than 40 area nonprofit groups and agencies are present each year. Interested groups are encouraged to call the chamber at (630) 879-7134 for more information and to register by Friday, Sept. 10.

Alternatively, area residents who can spare some time are invited to mark their calendars and plan to attend. Potential volunteers will not only learn about the variety of creative groups making a difference in the area; they can also sign up for raffle prizes, including two iPods, and enjoy light refreshments.

"If you have a few minutes each month, or a few hours, and would like to give back to the community, please join us on Sept. 18," says Breisch. "You'll be able to identify where your passion fulfills the community's great need."
