Peoria schools resurrect moment of silence
PEORIA — School leaders in Peoria have decided to add a 20-second moment of silence to the school day almost two years after ending the practice.
The Journal Star newspaper in Peoria reports the school board voted 6-1 Monday to allow the moment of silence starting next week.
The move follows a federal appeals court ruling last month that found such a period of silence to be constitutional.
Laura Petelle was the only board member to vote against it. She said the brief break was really just time away from school.
Some other area school superintendents said they wonder if the court ruling might yet change in the U.S. Supreme Court.
