Scouting McHenry at Larkin

McHenry (4-5) at Larkin (5-4)

When: today at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Field

Last year: Larkin 15, McHenry 6

Outlook: McHenry holds a 2-1 series edge in the last three season openers against the Royals. Larkin beat the Warriors last season with a supreme defensive effort, which they'll need to duplicate. An extremely young defense overall will be led by senior middle linebacker Brandon Williams and talented defensive backs Frankie Haywood and Shaq Moseley. Junior quarterback Kyle Newquist faced McHenry last year in his first varsity start and acquitted himself well by completing 6-of-10 passes for 87 yards without an interception. The loss later cost McHenry, which came on strong later in the season but finished out of the playoffs at 4-5. "They've got a very good coach," first-year Larkin coach Mike Scianna said of Tim Beagle. "You can see they're disciplined. I believe they'll throw the ball more this year. They showed that toward the end of last year. We're trying to get our young guys to understand this is probably what's going to happen."
